When it comes to protein desserts, my favorite recipes to make are protein ice cream, protein muffins, and this protein pudding.
As someone who works out regularly, keeping my protein content in check has been a priority. If you have a sneaky look in my pantry, you’ll notice several canisters of protein powder. I use the protein powder several times a day, usually after a workout (in the form of a shake), or after dinner, to hit my daily requirements.
For my post-dinner protein boost, I rarely ever have it in the form of a smoothie or shake. Instead, I make one of my protein desserts. While I have a few on rotation, my favorite is protein pudding.
What is high protein pudding?
As the name suggests, a protein pudding is a creamy dessert that is made with protein powder or has protein powder added to it. There are plenty of instant pudding mixes available with various flavors. While they are a healthier dessert to choose, most store bought kinds are packed with artificial ingredients and contain added sugars. Luckily, making your own is SO easy to do and is much healthier too!
I’ve been meaning to share a protein pudding recipe for quite some time. It’s so much easier to make than the packaged kind and the ingredient list is so much better! Only TWO ingredients are needed and the flavor options are unlimited!
No sugar and no thickeners are needed, but you’d never tell. The texture is thick, smooth, and incredibly creamy. It’s sweet and has a lovely vanilla flavor, and can be customized to a bunch of other flavors!
As someone who used to buy expensive pre-packaged protein pudding mixes, this homemade version has been a game changer. It’s something I now enjoy after every workout, and sometimes even for dessert!
How do you make a protein pudding?
- Protein powder– Either brown rice protein powder or casein protein powder. Avoid using whey-based powders as they will thin out the yogurt instead of thickening it up.
- Greek yogurt– Non-fat Greek yogurt or vegan high protein yogurt. Regardless of what kind of yogurt you use, ensure it is on the thicker side and has no added sugar.
- Sweetener of choice– Optional, but only add it if your protein powder isn’t overly sweet. Keep the calories at a minimum by using sugar free maple syrup or honey.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the protein powder with yogurt until thick. Transfer it into the refrigerator for an hour, to thicken. Once it has thickened, transfer the pudding into a ziplock bag and with a star tip attached to it. Pipe it out into serving glasses and serve immediately.
Tips to make the best recipe
- Avoid using watery or thin kinds of yogurt, as you’ll find the pudding less thick or creamy.
- Be sure that you like the taste of your protein powder, as the flavor is overpowering.
- For a chocolate protein pudding, use a chocolate protein powder and add 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
Storing and freezing the protein powder pudding
- To store: The pudding should always be stored in the refrigerator, covered. If you find the pudding has thickened too much, you can add some unsweetened almond milk or milk of choice to thin it out.
- To freeze: Place portions of the pudding in a shallow container and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. For the ultimate treat, remove the frozen pudding and place it in the blender. Blend until thick and creamy.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the yogurt with protein powder until no clumps remain and the mixture is thick. If you’d like a sweeter pudding, add the sweetener of choice.
Enjoy immediately or cover the bowl and refrigerate the pudding for an hour, to thicken.
Transfer the chilled pudding into a piping bag with a star tip and pipe out the pudding into two serving bowls.
** Any liquid sweetener works. I like to keep the sugar down, so use sugar free maple syrup, honey, or simple syrup.
